\"\"<\/a>Today Marija Pej\u010dinovi\u0107 Buri\u0107 (Croatia) starts her five-year term as Secretary General<\/a><\/em><\/strong> of the Council of Europe<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

She is only the second woman after Catherine Lalumi\u00e8re (France, 1989-1994) to hold this position in the history of Europe’s oldest and largest intergovernmental organisation<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, founded 70 years ago to protect and promote the three core values<\/a><\/em><\/strong>: human rights<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, democracy and the rule of law.<\/p>\n

Marija Pej\u010dinovi\u0107 Buri\u0107 holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Zagreb as well as a master’s degree in European Studies from the College of Europe in Bruges\/Belgium.<\/p>\n

After having started her career in the corporate environment, Marija Pej\u010dinovi\u0107 Buri\u0107 became involved in the European Movement, working at the Europe House in Zagreb from 1991 – 1997 and becoming its director in 1995.<\/p>\n

During the following years she was involved in Croatia’s negotiations with the European Union in various roles. Between 2004 and 2008 she worked as State Secretary first in the Ministry of European Integration<\/em> then in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In 2008, she was elected to the Croatian Parliament where she was i.a. a member of Croatia’s delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly (PACE)<\/a><\/em><\/strong> of the Council of Europe<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. As an independent European policy expert she worked on projects with the European Union and the UN Development Programme as well as bilaterally funded projects.<\/p>\n

In 2016, Marija Pej\u010dinovi\u0107 Buri\u0107 became State Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs<\/em>, then, in 2017, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs.<\/p>\n

In this role she chaired the Committee of Ministers<\/a><\/em><\/strong> of the Council of Europe during the Croatian Chairmanship of this decision-making body<\/a><\/em><\/strong> of the organisation from May to November 2018.<\/p>\n

With Marija Pej\u010dinovi\u0107 Buri\u0107 taking office, no less than four key positions within the Council of Europe<\/a><\/em><\/strong> will be held by women: Secretary General, Deputy Secretary General (Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, Italy), Commissioner for Human Rights<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (Dunja Mijatovi\u0107, Bosnia and Herzegovina), and President of the Parliamentary Assembly<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (Liliane Maury Pasquier, Switzerland).<\/p>\n
